Popular cultures from different parts of the world have long been considered worthy of pursuit, practice and study in their own right. With the advent of globalization, a trend towards integration and fusion of what were once thought of heterogeneous and localized cultures has emerged. Since each culture is mediated by the language of its place of origin, accurate and appropriate translation across cultures has an enormously important role to play in this process of fusion.
The 2009 International Conference on Translation and Popular Culture offers a forum for those interested in the people, events and other factors contributing to cultural fusion, taking a particularly close look at "what's hot" in the USA, Japan and other influential cultural geographies. Presentations and discussion are invited on all aspects of global modern culture, including language and literature, film, the worldwide web and other media, as well as trends in food, fashion, travel and other aspects of daily life. The role of translation in connecting cultures, while preserving individual differences and characteristics, will also be discussed. Papers on topics including (but not restricted to) the following are warmly invited:
1. Local and global aspects of popular culture
2. Popular culture and cultural/literary theory
3. Culture-specific issues in the translation of popular fiction
4. Taiwan translation practice and the transmission of foreign popular culture in Taiwan
5. Cross-cultural translation and the popularization of the classics
6. Popular culture and second language learning
7. Muslim culture and the Middle East fever
8. Afro-Asiatic languages in the modern world
9. Translating cultural trends from Japan and Korea
10. Travel and travel writing
Organized by: Translation Center, College of Foreign Languages and Literature, NCCU and Center for Cross-Cultural Studies, College of Foreign Languages and Literature, NCCU
